About Deborah Mulhern, PhD

Trained at Wesleyan, Harvard and Boston Universities, Dr. Deborah Mulhern has worked for more than 25 years as a Clinical Psychologist in the Washington, DC area, specializing in relationships, self-destructive behaviors and conflict resolution. Dr. Mulhern is an expert in the emerging field of Interpersonal Neurobiology. She is renowned for her ability to make complex neuroscience user-friendly.

Certified as an Imago therapist and workshop presenter, Dr. Mulhern brings a strong scientific background to her psychotherapeutic practice, balanced by extensive experience managing high intensity relationship conflicts. She is passionate about helping families and individuals manage stress and conflict. Using teaching skills along with intuitive wisdom, she creates a working space for individuals, couples and families to experience Mindsight.

Mindsight is the ability to see beyond a person’s behavior, into the deeper core of fears, hopes and intentions that motivate it. She translates neuroscientific findings into everyday language and practical strategies that can be used to handle relationship issues, parenting dilemmas and other interpersonal conflicts. After receiving help from Dr. Mulhern, clients understand frustrating and bewildering behaviors — their own as well as those whom they love. With this knowledge, her clients develop new patterns of responding to emotions and stress rather than reacting. This lays the foundation for resolving conflicts peacefully and creating lasting and secure connections with others.

Dr. Mulhern’s peaceful and grounded nature is a positive and empowering role model for her clients. She doesn’t just talk the talk — she walks the walk — seeing beyond the angry and fearful defenses that masquerade as the truth into the deeper truths of the universal longing for validation and affirmation.
